Questions to ask

These are college questions that were discussed during a workshop lead by 4 different college professors at the International Thespian festival. These questions may be considered or asked during college tours or interviews.

"What are my 4 years here going to look like?"
"Can you show me a degree plan and the coursework?"
"What's great? What sucks?" (Ask current students)
"How much is the meal plan?/What kind of food do you offer?"
"Will AP course credits transfer? How do you deal with it?"
"Can you explain some of the classes I will be taking?"
"3 things you enjoy the most? 3 things you find the most challenging?"
"Why did you choose this program? Why do you teach here?"
"Auditions? Audition processes/requirements?"
"Are acting majors offered tech skills? How much time will I spend in the shop?"
"TUITION?"
"Are freshmen allowed to perform? What am I going to be allowed to do as a freshman?"
"Can I get an outside job? Can I audition at other community theatres?"
"How do you help me get a job or an internship when I get out?"
"Can I get admitted and then defer admission?"

Other advice according to the professors:
"GPA trumps audition everywhere except conservatories."
"Be assertive at these college visits and informational sessions."
"Always know something about the school you're visiting."

A great way to audition for many theatre programs at one time is to go to Unified Auditions.  Held in late January and early February in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Chicago and New York.  Some of the top theatre schools attend.  Go to www.unifiedauditions.com for more information.
